The Craig R-III school district wants to thank all the people who voted on Tuesday. Your efforts helped the school district for many years to come. Almost 81% of voters in our district said NO to the ballot question on Tuesday. County-wide almost 70% of HOLT County said NO. A NO vote helps keep more monies dedicated toward schools, fire districts, ambulance, and city/county governmental agencies. All of these programs could have be hurt financially with a YES vote. Thank you, Voters.

Additionally, four school board members were voted in. David Trauernicht ran unopposed for the 1-year unexpired term, and he will join the board on 4/20. Newcomer Justin Rother was elected to the board along with incumbents Michael Peters and Jarod Whetsel. Congratulations on your victory; the district looks forward to your service on behalf of the students of Craig R-III. Thank You. Go Hornets!!!

Craig R-III Reminder: Remember to vote tomorrow on April 7th. Four candidates are running for three three-year term school board seats. Your vote helps determine the direction of our school.

Also, a question will be on the ballot tomorrow: the Homestead Real Estate Tax Credit Question will give voters a chance to provide more or less money to the school district and the other tax entities like fire, ambulance, and city/county government. A YES vote provides potential tax relief to primary residence holders of Holt County. A NO vote provides more tax monies to schools, and the other tax entities like fire, ambulance, and city/county government.

The district is not allowed to endorse a side. However, the district wants all potential voters to understand what they are voting for. The most recent Mound City News contains an article that highlights the pros and cons of this ballot question.

Get out and vote tomorrow Tuesday April 7th.

Here is some more information regarding Nitazenes.

As many of you have heard, KMBC ran a news article last week about the newly identified additive drug Nitazenes. This drug is 5-10 times more dangerous than Fentanyl.

The district is currently monitoring the presence of Nitazenes, and other dangerous narcotics, in the school's wastewater. The district is part of a free and voluntary state-run program that uses the information from the wastewater to alert health officials and law enforcement so that districts and communities may respond appropriately with education and proactive measures.

Last week's KMBC article left out the voice of school districts and the response to this drug by administrators. I contacted KMBC and invited them to Craig R-III to hear about our response. They interviewed me and SGT Shane Hux from the Missouri State Highway Patrol this morning. KMBC plans to run another article later today and tonight.

During the interview, I stressed the immediate response to danger by the district upon learning about this new type of synthetic drug.

***The superintendent immediately informed the board, teachers/staff, parents, news media, alumni, Team Craig, and the local superintendents in Northwest Missouri.

***SGT Hux gave a anti-drug themed presentation to the 6th-12 grade students. The entire Craig R-III community was invited to attend.

***The Mound City News attended the presentation and ran a feature article about the district's response and partnership with the MSHP.

***The local ambulance districts were contacted about Nitazenes, and the district received an additional 2 dozen doses of Narcan, which can be used to counteract a Nitazene exposure/reaction. These additional doses were placed in three key areas around the school to promote use, if ever needed.

***The entire staff was trained on how to administer the Narcan.

These proactive steps were used to educate our community on the harmful effects of this new class of drug.

The KMBC article brought up several tough questions that I and others have been asked recently.

***The school does not have a drug problem. Our community is like many others--there are no doubt drugs around us and in our midst. However, I do not have staff and students wandering around on drugs. If every district tested like we do, these challenges would be faced by many communities throughout the state.

***The water is safe to drink and use. The wastewater is tested about 15 feet before it goes into the city's sewer line, and it is treated over time through its regular processing system. The drinking water is safe for all to use and drink.

The district has been commended by the state for being proactive and leading around this sensitive topic.

If you have any questions, please reach me at mcopeland@craigr3school.org; or call/text me at 660-341-3844; or, call the school at 660-683-5331.

Look for versions of the interview and article to start running today. Also, here is a link to the article if you happened to miss it last week.
